Prerunning trails Thanksgiving weekend

7 years 11 months ago #3521 by James Howard
We plan to camp at Dead Horse Ranch State Park Thanksgiving weekend, and prerun Rally trails Friday and Saturday. Would anyone like to join us? There is a road to seldom visited cliff dwelling that some locals told us about that we want to find.

count me in for at least one of the days. It's a relatively short drive for me ~60-70 mins.

We are considering heading up there for a night. Still working out specifics for our Thanksgiving dinner here so we'd probably go up that Friday.

Hey James my name is jake i live in camp verde 15 min from cottonwood im working the days you plan on pre running the trails trying to find coverage i would like to tag along. but i was wondering which cliff dwellings you wanted to see if they are the ones off hwy 260 in camp verde maybe you can include them in the rally trail runs it would be pretty easy to make a loop after running broken arrow to take FS road 618 to 260 its a short hike to the dwellings but you are allowed to go inside of them. they are pretty cool then people could fuel up in CV and then venture back to cottonwood just a thought. And by the way im new to the rover world and looking forward to the rally.

Hello and welcome to the AZLRO.

The dwellings we were going to see are right where the Sycamore Cyn wilderness starts. I am not aware of the ones you are talking about, we will have to check them out.

We will be running the Henderson Flat Trial on Friday and the United Verde and Pacific Railroad Grade on Saturday. I posted up the trails to the events section of the website.

We are going to meet in the Walmart Parking lot in Cottonwood, AZ. Friday at 9am. Saturday at 10am. <!-- s:boink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_boink.gif" alt=":boink:" title="boink" /><!-- s:boink: -->

Kelly,

Do you guys have the capability of recording the the tracks of your two trails on a GPS device?

Would be great to have the trails routes well documented..

We explored for two days over the Thanksgiving weekend. Both days we got drove up to Jerome and took the Perkinsville Road out behind the Jerome Fire Department.

On in Friday, we did the Henderson Flat trail, which is Northeast Trail #14 in [u:phj75cs2]Backcountry Adventures Arizona[/u:phj75cs2] by Massey &amp; Wilson. It is an easy trail, with just enough rough stuff to keep rental cars out. The views are tremendous, and there are very few other people around. There is a ruin you can hike to at the end, but it took us 2.5 hours round trip, mostly because we spent so much time exploring it. If we do this trail at the Rally we should definitely not go to the ruin, it is a pretty dangerous hike. Even without the ruin it is a 6 hour round trip minimum, so it may be a little too long. But it has the advantage of not having to worry about a lot of other vehicles on the trail.

On Saturday we started on Northeast #16, the United Verde and Pacific Railroad. It was pretty flat, the scenery was ho-hum, there is nothing interesting left of the tracks, and there are plenty of sharp, sidewall-cutting rocks. It was so boring we turned around halfway through. We looked at the map and drove north on FR155. This is a lot shorter trip, and the views were great, too. It travels though Horseshoe Canyon, which flows into the Verde River. We didn't see anyone here, either, and the road was a little bit rougher. Our pickup truck would have difficulty (despite it having the &quot;Z71 Offroad&quot; package), but it was easy in the Range Rover. After we got home I was looking at the map and saw we missed a turnoff that looks like it goes to a cliff overlooking the Verde River, so we want to go back and find that. One thing about this road is it goes through multiple layers of dirt, from Sedona Red to white to brown to dark grey.

Photos are up in the gallery. http://www.azlro.org/gallery3/index.php ... Cottonwood

Very nice write-up - I'm sure Pierre will find that info useful for rally trial planning.
