Sedona?

4 years 8 hours ago #8037 by CFranco101
Sedona? was created by CFranco101
I won't be in town for the next trip and was thinking of heading up to Sedona soon and hit up a few trails. I was thinking the weekend of the 22nd or the 29th, Saturdays or Sundays are fine by me, whichever date gets the best turnout if anyone is interested.

Definitely Broken Arrow, and whatever other trails I will leave up for suggestion.

Here's an option for you, depending on the weather...

You could run Schnebly Hill Road from just outside of Flagstaff for a very scenic descent into Sedona, have some lunch, then run Broken Arrow.

You can check on the Schnebly's closure status here:

Hi Carlos, I might be able to go on the 28th. We'll have family in town for Thanksgiving, and a Saturday day trip might be something they'd enjoy. But don't plan on us. With the family dynamics, plans change hour by hour.

Hey Dirk,
I can do either day, Friday the 28th or Saturday the 29th so whichever works for you guys just let me know. I figured I'd leave it open until next Friday and we can firm up plans then. Have your visitors been to Sedona before?

Looking forward to this.

Hi Carlos, we'd probably be a last minute join, if we go. Case in point: I thought the 28th was a Saturday. Our relatives have a couple young kids, and visits are not very planned. But it would be great - to my mind - to combine a trip to Sedona trails with Thanksgiving visit.

So I figured we could meet at the 4 Sons Chevron at 3150 West Carefree Highway, Phoenix between 7:30 and 8am on Friday the 28th. Plan is to hit the road at 8. Prices at this station tend to be high so you might want to fill up prior to arriving.

Let me know if you guys have any suggestions for trails, so far the plan is like Koly suggested, Run Schnebly down to Sedona, stop for lunch then do Broken Arrow.

I have CB and FRS for comms(working on my Ham License as I type).

I can only imagine it covered in snow. Maybe we'll get lucky this year and there's just enough snow to make it look nice, but not too much.
After all I did move here to get away from the snow.

Sounds like we'll have a pretty decent turnout which will be really fun, I'll make sure to charge up the GoPro for some nice footage. Are any of you guys attending the parade the day before?

Is this our meeting site?
Chevron at 3150 West Carefree Highway, Phoenix 7:30 - 8am on Friday the 28th.
If a Red Rock Pass is needed I may have to buy one.

That is fine, Yes we will definitely run Broken Arrow. Depending on traffic on the trails and how long it takes to complete both, if we have enough time maybe we could drive up to devils archway and hike up.

We did this on my first run with the club thanks to Pierre and it was possibly one of the most breathtaking places I've ever been. But we can figure that out over lunch.

I will have my wife and daughter with me as well and I think another member who is not on the site often will probably join us as well with his family.

That is the correct meeting place. I'm not sure if one is needed being that I am fairly new to AZ. We did not buy one when I ran Broken Arrow with the club before, but I have always bought one when I went on my own.

The way I see it, it goes towards maintaining the parks so even if I don't need it I look at it as my contribution for using the trails. On some trails it's only needed if you will be stopping along the way or something like that. Again, I'm fairly new to AZ so I probably have that mixed up somehow.

You do not need a red rock pass for Broken Arrow. Looks like Schnebly Hill is still open, but you should definitely check its status before you run it Saturday a.m.

If you leave at 8am from the Chevron, you'll get to the top of Schnebly Hill around 10am, and it's an enjoyable, scenic drive down with several lookout points to stop for photos - if you're not in a hurry, 2-3 hours to get down into Sedona proper, putting you at lunch right between 12-1. You could either stop in Sedona and eat before heading to Broken Arrow, or bring your own lunch and head to Broken Arrow and eat your lunch on Submarine Rock or Chicken Point, (might be chilly though).

This is exactly what I was thinking for lunch, to do it on Broken Arrow right at Submarine Rock since it is such an awesome spot. This way people can have the time to take it in and check it all out before we really hit the trail.

Thanks for the info on the red rock pass, I was just looking that up.

Might be a dumb question but is everyone going to be ok with the steps at the end? I know it can certainly have a major pucker factor for some.

There are a couple areas to watch stock vehicle's front air dams, and there is potential for wheels to get some rock rash going down the steps, particularly at the top, but I've taken a virtually new stock RR sport down it with no issues (scraped a couple spots on the undercarriage but no dmg). LR3/4 are fine.

reminder: When you're leaving, just at the parking/exit, don't forget there is a large step that a lot of people bang their rear bumper on because they think it's not that big after all of the other stuff they've done, but it can crunch a rear quarter panel or bumper if you don't take it slow with a stock vehicle.

Thanks Koly,
I guess I should have mentioned this from the beginning. (looking forward to trail leader course LoL). My apologies, if you have not run Broken Arrow before there are certainly some spots to be mindful of which have the potential to cause some damage.

Happy to report a fun day out on the trails with everyone. Most made it, some missed it and hopefully we see them out next time.

As usual, some tools were required to make it through the day, but gladly no major issues. This was all started off by Jimmy James and his 72 Series 3 losing the back section of the exhaust about 20 minutes in. No matter, this was promptly removed and tossed in the back of the series 3.

We then encountered quite a bit of traffic as we made our way down Schnebly Hill Rd. So far so good...until Thomas radioed in that Andrew's rear left tire was going flat. Upon inspection we realized the culprit was a broken piece of a utility knife blade.

So far a proper Rover day...

The tire was repaired and off we were to find lunch. After a brief stop at subway for some to go lunch Pierre was kind enough to take lead onto soldiers pass where lunch was enjoyed along with the wonderful view.

After Soldier's pass we ran Broken Arrow which was fun as always, I got some pretty good footage there of everyone. I will need to edit and post the links once they're uploaded to YouTube.

Pictures are already uploaded. Thanks to Pierre for his help leading the group today!

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves!

Not yet. It's pretty long (40 some minutes! lol) since I included footage of almost everyone at some point of the day.
I just have to find music to add to it that won't get it taken down on youtube for copyright issues. I should have it done by tomorrow.
