El Camino del Diablo over New Years

4 years 11 months ago #7249 by DirkV
Posted this on the azlro facebook page a week or so ago. Reposting here for those who might not be on facebook.
I've penciled in a few days for an off road adventure over New Year's - same dates as last year's Mojave trip. Anybody interested in joining Laurie and me on a trip on El Camino del Diablo. Planning to depart in the morning on Dec 30 from Yuma (we'll stay overnight in Yuma on the 29th). Spend the 30th and 31st on the trail, which should allow a lot of time for exploring. And return home on the New Years day.
I've checked a few recent reports, and the word is that Border Patrol presence is stronger than ever, and migrant activity is down. Also the BP has done a fair amount of trail grading, so it's not a technically challenging trail, but still scenic and historic. All the same, I'm thinking this would be better with at least a couple vehicles.
Let me know if you are interested. I'll coordinate permits.

Here are some links about history, border issues, etc.

A quote I liked: Somebody asked the rep at cabeza prieta wilderness office in Ajo about "personal safety issues on the Camino Del Diablo. She said 'If we didn't think it was safe...we wouldn't let people go out there.'"
I'm starting to make a Plan B for exploring around Kofa wilderness and Swansea and Bill Williams around Quartzsite and Parker, but I still hope I can get some interest in ECDD.

I'm thinking of trying this again: celebrate New Year's on the trail. Last year we went with Plan B, KOFA, which turned out great. Anybody else interested in Camino del Diablo this year?

Just checked last year's posting and should point out that dates will be slightly different for New Years 2015.
And the links from last year don't work. I'll try again:

Re dates: I have quite a few days off, so there's some flexibility to make things work if we make a small group trip. We're visiting relatives in San Diego, so I try to plan the camping trip on the way back. I'm penciling in the same days as last yr. We'd stay overnight in Yuma area on the 29th (maybe camp somewhere near the trailhead start or just stay in a motel). Then start the overlanding on the 30th.
Camp along the trail the nights of 30th and 31st (happy New Years <!-- s:prosit: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_beerToast.gif" alt=":prosit:" title="prosit" /><!-- s:prosit: --> ). Return to Phx on New Years day.

Hey Dirk,
I might actually be able to make this trip if things line up correctly. When do you need an answer by?

Carlos, that would be great! I'm sure there's some time before we'll need to finalize. I'll check for details on permits, but I recall that the advance requirement is only a week or 2.

Hey Dirk,

Did you firm up any details on this? Not sure it's possible for me yet though.

Thanks.

Hi Glenn, What with the trip to the dunes (which we can't make because we're coming from San Diego), I haven't gotten any additional participants. So I'm afraid El Camino del Diablo will have to wait for me.
We've also had CA relatives, who aren't 4WD folks, who want to go camping over New Year's, so we're going to check out Anza Borrego in CA with them.

See you on the trail sooner or later,

Dirk, if you haven't done Anza before let's get together for a beer this week. It's a great place and lots to see. I can point you in the right direction if you want. Maybe you've been there though?
