Charouleau Gap Trail on Saturday the 12th of January

5 years 10 months ago #6101 by hemphill
We will be running Charouleau Gap from South to North on Saturday, a great day will be had by all. We will make this as fun and safe as possible. Be aware this will be an all day trail, leaving from IKEA in Phoenix in the morning and returning to Phoenix that night. It is a challenging and long trail, but you will be rewarded by great scenery and breathtaking terrain, so bring your camera's. Will post more info as the week progresses.

Thank you
Ryan and Shaun

I'm seriously considering it... depends on how early on Saturday we meet at IKEA and my running schedule. Hoping I can fit it in.

The trail is a lot better now that it was. The Forest Service graded the roads. We ran it last spring with my boss and a colleague. You didn't even have to slow down for Kiss Rock, and probably wouldn't have recognized it unless you had the waypoint on your GPS. The colleague had a 92 Toyota Land Cruiser totally stock. It was a challenge to get that long thing through the creek without ripping off all the plastic ground effect bits, but we did it.

My boss ran it again a month or so ago and he said the monsoon rains have had an impact. Plenty of washouts and challenges. You know know where Kiss Rock is, but it wasn't too hard. Another good storm or two should fix that.

The trail is nothing like that anymore. Most of the trail you see in the video up until just before we hit the water is now graded and gone. The rest after the 2nd cattle guard is much as it was with a few wash outs and gullies but overall its not a patch on the trail it used to be. The tree at the bottom of the step is also gone (cut down). Hopefully a few more heavy rains and snow melts will bring some of it back but that may take a few years.

oh well that kinda sucks . I would have liked to Rover the same trail.fingers crossed on the heavy rains. I dont like when trails are made easier. Crown King is noting to like it used to be either.

Yeah, that sucks! Looking at the various photos from all the different clubs that have run over the years really shows you what the trail used to be like. Like Ian says, it'll come back in some form over the years as erosion takes more and more from the trail. Well, it is now like a new trail since its so different. Also, running the trail now gives us a chance to see how it changes over the coming years.

Anyway, back to this Saturdays run; it is going to be pretty cold. Not 100% sure where it is, but I think its between Tucson and Mt Lemmon. Lemmon is forcasting a high for the day in the high 20s with a slight breeze and Tucson mid to high 40s (low to 0% precipitation). Pack and dress accordingly.

Please be aware that its a long trail and the weather is expected to be quite cold 42 degrees. Please dress accordingly.
Also please bring plenty of water to drink on trail, we will be stopping for lunch, so dont forget your chairs and food. Look forward to seeing everyone ready to have a fun day of wheeling.

Thought this was interesting. Kiss Rock was a well-known obstacle on the Gap that was removed during the Forestry Service trail 'maintenance'.

3 Pics of it. May 2002 when I 1st ran it, Jan 2010 just before the maintenance and Feb 2010 while work was underway.

Had a great time. The little bit of snow and ice at the top was a bit interesting along with the fair amount of articulation through out the entire trail. The creek crossings could be very interesting with enough snow and run off come March. Very cool trail. As nice as the scenery is in the winter, they should be pretty spectacular in the spring and fall with warm weather and water to make everything bloom.

Thanks for sharing the photos Ian. Kiss Rock is now a tad more challenging than pic 3 and continued erosion has it well on its way back to the looks of pic 2. Give it a few more years.

Looking forward to running it again in the future.

HI Rob,

Glad you enjoyed it. We ran it a couple of weeks ago as well. Yes it can get a bit more interesting in the spring down along the creek with the snow melt or during/after a good downpour. It will wash out in places as time goes on no doubt but it really isn’t a patch on what it was. A couple of years ago before they tore it up before the cattle guards or even earlier before the car wash was lost for example.

This pic is the old car wash section from back in 2003. That’s not high water either... :)

Chuck - glad you made it home - hope I didn't detour you too much once we hit pavement.

Another fun day on the trail! If anyone has pix, please post them in the photo gallery... I took a timelapse video of the entire day I'll get online when I have some time to process it.

Glad you made it out to go wheeling with us.

That sucks about the windows but luckily easily replaceable from others in the club with spares.
