Rug Road / Turkey Creek Campout
Meet Up - Nov. 27, 10am at the Mammoth Circle K.
The address: 307 AZ-77, Mammoth, AZ 85618
We will be running Rug Road from West to East. Friday we will head up the road and that night we will camp out at the top at the Aravaipa Canyon overlook. Saturday we will drop into Turkey Creek and explore the small cliff dwelling and spend the night next to the creek. Sunday we will head out for home.
No trailers, even cool off-road ones. The last time we decided to run this road our friend had a trailer and was unable to pull the trailer over the rougher sections. Therefore none of us were able to continue.
Turkey Creek to Mammoth via 'The Rug Road.' Moderate+ trail with some steps and loose rock climbs (stock LR's without running boards okay), Historic trail, full day. Rug Road got its name from the remnants of carpet that people have used to fill holes and ledges along the road to make it more passable. The road is one of the roughest roads in the southeastern Arizona - it is not for the faint of heart. Travel on the Rug Road requires a good high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle and experience driving in these conditions. The road transverses Table Mountain between Turkey Creek on the east end and Mammoth on the west end. It is only about 20 miles long but will take a full day to traverse. You may want to plan for two days to be safe and to let your body recuperate from the rugged road! Related Links:
